Laser telephone at the Long Night of Science

On the past weekend the Max Planck Institute took part in the biannual Long Night of Science. Research institutes and companies in Erlangen, F├╝rth and Nuremberg opened their doors to the broad public, demonstrated tutorial experiments and explained why both fundamental research and technological development is so important.
Many of our members were involved in this event and we took the oppurtunity to set up the “laser telephone”. During this experiment accoustic information at the transmitter is transformed into optical information via a microphone that modulates a laser diode. At the receiver the process is inverted by a photodiode. The experiments vividly explains how communication based on optical networks can work and attracted a large number of interested visitors over the whole course of the evening. A full description of the experiment is coming soon.
